During the midst of all these property-sharing landowners, a structure was built on what is now the Old Mystic Inn’s property corner. Through records belonging to prominent Mystic resident of years past Mr. Charles Eldredge, we gain a picturesque perspective. At the exact time this apportionment of land was selected for its new purpose, it had been sitting just south of the Hyde Estate. Mr. Hyde had thirteen children and seemed quite motivated to acquire an education facility for them in his hometown. The new structure of much discussion would serve as the primary educational establishment for children of the community. Officially, on April 24, 1839, a portion of the now Old Mystic Inn’s property was granted to the Sixth School District in the Village of Mystic, town of Stonington. Much like the name of the community changed to Old Mystic in 1890, so did the name of the school change to the Sixth School District in the Village of Old Mystic, town of Stonington. Though titled the Sixth School District, it was in fact the very first school to be built in Old Mystic.

Eldredge’s letter from January 1930 provided yet more detail, continuing that originally the schoolhouse served all ages and grades and actually originally stood at first as a simple one-room schoolhouse, as was commonly seen throughout New England. However, Mr. Eldredge’s accounts show that by 1851, the school had become a two-story building, and students who passed their classes with high aptitude and skill graduated from the ground level to the second level. A newer school was built around the 1870s or 1880s just to the north of this one and expanded to four rooms. This would have sat on what would now be regarded as the backside of the Old Mystic Inn property. The original schoolhouse became a family home for about thirty years before it was lost tragically to yet another Mystic fire in the early 1900s. The larger and more improved schoolhouse expanded some and remained an educational structure in Old Mystic until 1959, when overcrowding prevented these smaller schoolhouses from being adequate any longer to a growing population and importance placed on education. A new brick school was built in 1959, and the antiquated Sixth School District in the Village of Mystic saw its end. This third school eventually also could not serve the growing populations of the Mystic community, and a new school was built. The third schoolhouse became an administrative building for the local board of education.
